This pre-manufactured build-ing sits on a hill adjacent to the President's Residence and Art Building 3. It houses a wood shop, metal shop/foundry and classroom. The facility replaced an under-sized, ill-equipped and re-motely located space, and the University believes the new building will boost student and faculty recruitment.
The envelope of the building consists primarily of metal. Open high bay areas were created through a rigid steel frame structure, providing spaces for ducts, hoods and oversized equipment. A clerestory window/dormer wall provides advantageous north lighting in all areas. The external metal siding, roofing and trim have distinct colors to create visual interest. A circular, brick wall encloses an outdoor plaza which can be used for both fabrication (teaching) and display of student work.
This project received 1ST PLACE IN 2011 COMMERCIAL/RETAIL EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN, AMERICAN BUILDINGS & ARCHITECTURAL METAL SYSTEMS. |
